The Biggest ISP’s in Africa



Like all other countries, Africa also has its internet service providers (ISP) that offer internet services to their customers at affordable prices.


Below are some of the biggest ISP’s in Africa. These companies have been able to compete with each other to ensure that they deliver the best to their customers.

In doing so, they have carved out their own niches and have become major players in the world of internet broadband services in Africa. Some of them are also well known international companies operating on the African continent.


1). MainOne
Based in Nigeria and has a network of more than 100,000 km. The total line length deployed by MainOne makes it currently one of Nigeria’s largest backbone networks providing connectivity to large corporates, internet service providers (ISPs), over-the-top service providers and multinationals. The company also provides data center colocation services as well as Internet access services through its own data centers. Its customers include MTN Group, Vodacom Group, Airtel Africa and Globacom among others.

2). Raya
Founded in 2005, Raya is an ISP company that serves consumers and businesses throughout sub-Saharan Africa. The company offers DSL, WiFi, mobile data and IPTV services.

3) Orange
Morocco’s largest telecommunications company, Maroc Telecom has a huge network infrastructure with over 6 million internet subscribers and is currently available to about 70% of Moroccan households.

4) Africatel
Founded in 1964, Africatel is a telecom company that provides a range of services including landline, internet and cellular communication to over 2.5 million customers across 29 countries throughout sub-Saharan Africa. It was created as an enterprise of Sonatel International Corporation (SICOMA), a public Congolese industrial group that specializes in telecommunications. The group also operates under the name Sonatel within other countries including Angola, Burundi, Chad, Central African Republic, Congo Brazzaville and Cameroon.

Tigo is a global telecommunications company operating in 16 countries throughout Central and West Africa. The company’s headquarters are located in Lomé, Togo. With more than 12 million customers across its regional footprint, Tigo is one of sub-Saharan Africa’s largest and most valuable mobile operators.

6). Airtel Nigeria
Nigeria’s Airtel is a leading network provider with a nationwide customer base. Founded in 1994, MTN is a South African multinational telecommunications company that provides wireless voice, messaging, and broadband services. By 2007 it had become sub-Saharan Africa’s largest mobile operator. As of 2011, it was ranked as a Tier 1 company on the Communication Intelligence and Network Association’s Global Competitiveness Index.


8). Globacom Nigeria
Globacom has been providing telephone and Internet services to Nigeria since 1999. The company provides service to residents of Lagos, Abuja, Ibadan, Ilorin, Kano and Kaduna. Globacom operates under multiple subsidiaries throughout Nigeria, including Globacom Telecommunications Limited (GTL), Afri-Tele Link (ATL), Super Cell Telecoms Limited (SCTL) and Cyfronet Limited.
